When I was young
I pictured a fairytale marriage
like the tales of Cinderella
and Snow White.
No one told me
becoming one
was a steep mountain
with an unknown height.
No one told me
that during a fight
when he walked out the door
after the brief relief
for a break in the yelling
it would start to feel like
someone was choking the life out of me
from the inside
as thoughts of him crashing
or leaving me
flow rapidly in my head
until the moment he calls
or comes home.
